A Tribute to Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley
April 5 is a rough day for rock music.
In 1994, Nirvana front man/”spokesman of a generation” Kurt Cobain took his own life, at least according to the coroner (Cobain’s body was discovered on April 8, but it was believed that he passed away three days previous).
In 2002, Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley succumbed to a drug overdose in his apartment in Seattle, the second vibrant and enigmatic vocalist from Seattle to pass away on the 5th of April.
Cobain was only 27 and Staley 32 when he passed away, and both left behind unfinished legacies. Their bands are still relevant today, though, with Nirvana dominating FM radio and Alice in Chains being re-vitalized with new vocalist William DuVall.
With today’s other news of live music legend Jim Marshall passing, the fifth day of April has proven to be a challenging one for rock ‘n’ roll.
R.I.P. to Marshall, Staley & Cobain – your contributions to rock’s past, present, & future has not and will not go unnoticed.
As a tribute, here are two of the singers’ best performances, both from MTV Unplugged.
