Sgt. Pepper On The Auction Block

Oct 9, 2012 at 9:17 AM | MusicNews | By Rock Square

Next month, a UK auction house will be offering up a choice bit of Beatles history. If you’ve got a couple hundred thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket, mark your calendar for November 13 and get ready to battle other Beatles fans for the right to own the original insert art from the Fab Four’s landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Though not nearly as famous as the album’s cover collage, Peter Blake’s more subdued insert work is most certainly iconic. Against a green backdrop, Blake’s minimalist design depicts the album’s titular protagonist, along with The Beatles and a cut-out mustache.

“Peter Blake’s collage is a tangible slice of rock history,” said the Acution House's Senior Specialist James Rawlin. “Sgt. Pepper had a huge impact on the cultural landscape. It was the first concept album, when music, story, image and studio expertise all came together. In this work we witness the creation of the eponymous Sgt Pepper himself, with his familiar accoutrements of moustache and sergeant’s stripes, originally intended for fans to cut out and keep.”

Blake’s collage is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £80,000. Which, is code for a very pricy collage, if you’re not familiar with English currency. Best to just dust off your Sgt. Pepper’s LP and enjoy the tunes.
