Ozzy Osbourne Discusses Black Sabbath’s Perseverance
Metal legends Black Sabbath, who raged back to life last year with the stunning 13, are currently taking another victory lap around North America. And although one might assume the elder statesmen of heavy music are starting to lose steam, frontman Ozzy Osbourne insists the band has enough vim and vigor to see them through the rigors of touring.
“I’m still 19,” the 65-year-old singer joked in a recent interview. “I don’t wake up in the morning and go, ‘Wow, I’m 65.’ I just get on with it you know. I don’t know how a 65 year old guy’s supposed to feel? I just had a physical and my doctor’s says, ‘You’ve got the heart of a 21-year-old and I can’t believe it, nothing’s wrong.’ I’ve had a f****** wild life believe me.”
As for guitarist Tony Iommi, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012, Osbourne expresses amazement at his bandmate’s ability to overcome the odds.
“I haven’t had one of them dark phone calls so I presume he’s okay.” Osbourne said. “I mean it’s got to be worrying. But he’s doing fine I think, I hope. He’s unbelievable. We all know our job, we all know our craft but he’s a very talented guy. Considering on his fret hand he’s got no fingertips, he plays with prosthetic fingers at the end. I’ve often said to him, ‘How the hell do you know when you’re touching the strings?’ I don’t know. It’s amazing.”
Sabbath will take a month off after their North American tour concludes at the Hollywood Bowl on April 26th. They’ll pick up again on May 29th in Abu Dhabi before bringing the noise to Europe in June.
